Sumitomo Construction Machinery was founded in 1963 as the construction machinery division of Sumitomo Heavy Industries. In 1986 the company separated from Sumitomo Heavy Industries and has supported the Sumitomo Group as a manufacturer specializing in construction equipment.

Sumitomo Construction Machinery was reorganized into a holding company in 2001. Corporate spin-offs Sumitomo Construction Machinery Manufacturing , and Sumitomo Construction Machinery Sales, formed the Sumitomo Construction Machinery Group, creating a structure aimed at efficient manufacturing and sales of products.

Hydaulic excavators and other Sumitomo Construction Machinery products are all manufactured at Sumitomo Construction Machinery manufacturing's Chiba works, in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Concentrating production at the Chiba Works, which has a yearly output of 9,000 units, permits thoroughgoing quality control. Centralized control of market information is reflected in product development and improvement. By 2007 , the Chiba Works had produced a total of over 140,000 hydraulic excavators.

Sumitomo Construction Machinery's sales and service network extends throughout the world. The company has an established network of distributors selling and servicing Sumitomo-brand hydraulic excavators in Japan, China, Asia Pacific, Mlddle East and Africa markets, Sumitomo Construction Machinery supplies products under long-established hydraulic excavators brand names like Link-Belt and Case on an OEM basis and has a good track record among users of both brands.

The company's basic approaeh to manufacturing is to keep in touch with customers, learn what they want and reflect their requirements in its products. Entering the China market in earnest in 1994, Sumitomo Construction Machinery's order book grew as it landed orders from Shanghai BAO STEEL GROUP and for development projects in Heilongjiang Province, In March 2004, the company entered into a joint venture with the Hong Kong SCE Group , its dealer and business partner in China, to form Sumiju SCE (Xiamen) Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. Through this new venture in China, Sumitomo Construction Machinery will build an even stronger sales and senrice network.
