A Steam shovel is a big excavating machine which is powered by steam. The machine has been made for the purpose of removing and lifting materials such as soil and rock. In case of softer grounds the shovels were utilized for timber mats for the purpose of leveling and steadying the ground. The very first versions used the boom for maneuvering.

The technique of utilizing the steam shovels is not all that difficult. The operator at the same time of digging stretches and lifts the dippers stick in order to fill the material into the bucket. The shovel is moved in order to load a motor truck or railway car at the time when the bucket is filled. The load drops by the release of the locking pin.
