The Sumitomo Group is one of Japan's leading corporate groups . The original company was founded by the Sumitomo family about 400 years ago.
Its history began in the end of 16th century, when Japan was ruled by samurai, long before the Meji restoration transforme d Japan . The Sumitomo family discovered a rich copper lode and gained permission from the government to operate mining and refining at the Besshi copper mine on the island of Shikoku. The family oversaw the whole process, from boring mining tunnels to extraction, transport and metal refining using the latest European metho ds , and contributed greatly to Japan's modernization.
Businesses snowballed from operations at Besshi, and developed into the companies that now constitute the Sumitolno Group, including Sumitomo Metal Mining, Sumitomo Metal Industries, Sumitomo Chemical, and Sumitomo Heavy Industries, all of which are still linked either directly or indirectly to copper mining. The group also include s a fore stry company, a b ank and other financial sector companies in the real estate, insurance, electrical product and home appliance manufacturing, an d logisties fields , a trading company and others. Most stem originally from links to the Besshi copper mine.
